Analyze the purchase and use of automotive lubricants

How to choose lubricating oil? What are the key points and precautions for use? Perhaps this is a question between the benevolent and the wise, and it has a lot to do with different models and the driving habits of car owners. Today, Netease Automotive invited Shell lubricants engineers to give you a more detailed interpretation of lubricant knowledge.
** One aspect: Lubricant purchase
First of all, how can we ensure that we can purchase genuine lubricants?
Shell engineers reminded that you can choose from two aspects: first, distinguish from the appearance, if the product packaging is not clearly printed, and if the lubricant contains a lot of impurities, it is an abnormal phenomenon. Secondly, you can call the manufacturer for help. For example, Shell uses 11-fold anti-counterfeiting technology, which can verify the authenticity of the product from multiple dimensions. If you really buy a non-genuine lubricant product, you can also seek help from the manufacturer and seek help through legal means.
Secondly, how do you choose the lubricant that suits your car?
Nowadays, the selection of engine lubricants is based on two standards, one is the viscosity standard, namely SAE; the other is the quality standard, namely API/ACEA/ILSAC. When different vehicles leave the factory, the automobile manufacturers have stipulated the two indexes AE viscosity of the lubricant And API/ACEA/ILSAC grade. The engineer recommends that the car owner select the appropriate SAE viscosity and the appropriate API/ACEA/ILSAC grade corresponding to the lubricant according to the regulations in the vehicle user manual. Lubricants of different brands have two indicators: SAE viscosity and API/ACEA/ILSAC grade, and car owners can choose by viewing the two labels.
At the same time, in addition to the selection criteria of the car manual, the following three criteria can also be used to determine how to choose lubricating oil:
A: Engine technology: Generally speaking, car engines equipped with advanced technologies such as TSI, direct injection, turbocharging, etc., in order to ensure smoother operation and reduce engine loss, it is recommended to use fully synthetic engine oil;
B: Engine displacement: The larger the engine displacement, the stricter its internal working conditions are, and the higher the requirements for lubricating oil. For engines with displacements of more than 2.5L, it is recommended to use fully synthetic engine oil;
C: Vehicle operating conditions: The vehicle operating conditions mainly include the driver’s driving habits and driving environmental conditions. On the one hand, if the vehicle is idling for a long time in congestion or driving at high speed for a long time, the loss of oil will increase. It is recommended to use fully synthetic oil On the other hand, if the air environment is not good, the fuel quality in the engine is not good, and impurities in the engine will inevitably increase, thereby reducing the life of the lubricating oil. Therefore, in this case, it is recommended to choose a fully synthetic lubrication with better oil quality Oil use.
At the same time, Shell engineers also reminded that modern engines have the characteristics of light weight, precision, and high load. Fully synthetic motor oils are more in line with the requirements of modern engines. At the same time, fully synthetic motor oils perform better in terms of oxidation resistance, oil film strength and viscosity stability. , The use effect is also better.
However, when choosing lubricants, it is not necessary to pursue fully synthetic oils. Choose according to your car’s situation and the degree of caring for the car. At the same time, the price of fully synthetic engine oil is higher than semi-synthetic and mineral oil, so friends who pay attention to cost performance You can also choose other engine oils according to your needs.
Second aspect: the use of lubricating oil
First of all, high temperature is a difficult problem in the use of lubricating oil.
High temperature is a relatively important problem in the use of lubricating oil. In the vehicle operating conditions described above, the temperature in the engine will be very high during long-term idling and high-speed operation, which is prone to deterioration and damage and reduced life.
At the same time, even if the oil has good oxidation resistance, long-term high temperature in the engine will cause the water in the oil to evaporate, making the oil thicker, lowering the lubrication effect, and possibly increasing engine wear.
Secondly, the long-term failure of the engine to run normally will also cause the lubricating oil to deteriorate too quickly.
Long-term non-operation of the engine refers to the long-term operation of the car within a five-kilometer drive. However, this is a more extreme phenomenon. In this case, after the fuel and oil enter the engine compartment, the engine does not enter the normal operation process. Stop running, this will cause the fuel to enter the oil, dilute the lubricating oil, and cause the lubricating oil to deteriorate and deteriorate too quickly.
Third, the quality of some accessories and fuel in the engine will also affect the service life of the oil.
The quality of engine parts will also affect the service life of the oil, especially the machine filter and air filter. If the quality of the machine filter is not good, too much impurities will be mixed into the oil, causing the oil to oxidize too fast, and the air filter is the same. Nowadays, the air quality in large and medium-sized cities has serious problems, so if the quality of the air filter is not in place, the impurities in the air will also be mixed into the oil to reduce the life of the oil.
The quality of the fuel is also a more important factor. There are too many impurities in the fuel. The impurities left in the engine compartment after combustion will also be mixed into the lubricating oil as the lubricating oil cleans the engine compartment, causing too much impurities in the engine oil and over-oxidizing. Fast, also reduces the oil life.
The third aspect: Lubricant replacement
The oil change interval must be strictly in accordance with the requirements of the car manufacturer.
Combining the three important factors in the process of use, Shell’s engineers suggested that the oil change interval of lubricants must be strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s oil change requirements. Domestic air and oil quality are not the same, and the congestion in large and medium cities in China is also It is very easy to cause a long-term idling of the car, so it is recommended to change the lubricating oil strictly according to the manufacturer’s requirements. If the lubricating oil is not replaced for a long time, a large amount of carbon deposits, sludge and sediment will remain, which will cause serious damage to the engine.
In addition, some online tips for identifying lubricant replacement standards are not recommended.
*Later, we specifically asked Shell engineers to verify the feasibility of the “chronic test paper”, an online trick to identify lubricant usage. Shell engineers said that the test method of this type of chronic test paper is generally not recommended for consumers to replace lubricants. Standards, because in the internal testing process, the chronic titration test is only one of the many testing standards, and it is carried out under more stringent conditions. However, if consumers do their own testing, the test results cannot be guaranteed, especially It is to identify the impurities in the lubricating oil. If there are visible impurities on the chronic test paper, it means that the engine oil has deteriorated very seriously.
Preservation of lubricating oil
In terms of the preservation of lubricants that many car owners are more concerned about, Shell engineers suggest that they should be stored in the dark and insulated. Unopened lubricants can be stored for about three years, while unopened lubricants can be stored in a good storage environment. It can be stored for about a year, but it is not recommended to put it in the trunk. After all, the temperature in the car in summer is still relatively high, which will accelerate the loss of lubricating oil.
After *, Shell engineers once again suggested choosing lubricants according to their own needs. Of course, engines that use fully synthetic lubricants for a long time will have a good maintenance effect and a longer service life, which can delay the overhaul.
